The UK ETA: who needs one, and who still needs a visa
14 October 2026. 4 minute read.
Since February 2026 the UK requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation from visitors who don’t need a visa. Here is how to tell which applies to you.
The UK now operates a "no permission, no travel" rule. Every visitor needs permission before they fly: either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
Visa or ETA?
- If your nationality needs a visa to visit the UK — for example Nigerian and Ghanaian citizens — you still apply for a Standard Visitor visa. An ETA is not an alternative for you.
- If your nationality does not need a visa (for example many European, North American and some Gulf nationalities), you need an ETA instead.
- British and Irish citizens, and people who already hold UK permission to live, work or study, don’t need an ETA.
How the ETA works
The ETA is applied for online or through the official app. It is linked to your passport, allows multiple visits, and lasts for two years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner. Most decisions arrive within a few working days, but apply well before you travel.
Where AJOVIA helps
If you need a visa, we build a checklist around your trip, review your documents and help you avoid the common reasons for refusal. If you need an ETA, we can point you to the official service and plan the rest of your trip.
Always confirm the current rules on GOV.UK before you travel; requirements and fees change.
