Which Schengen country should you apply to?
18 September 2026. 4 minute read.
Paris, then Amsterdam, then Rome? The country you apply to depends on where you’ll spend the most time, and it matters.
A Schengen short-stay visa covers 29 European countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. But you can’t apply to just any of them.
The main destination rule
- Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights.
- If your time is split equally, apply to the country you will enter first.
- If your main purpose is in one country (a conference, a family event), that country usually counts as your main destination.
Why it matters
Applying to the wrong consulate is a common reason for refusal, and it can raise questions at the border about your real plans. Your bookings, insurance and itinerary should all point to the same story.
What to prepare
- Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 for the whole Schengen area.
- A day-by-day itinerary with accommodation.
- Bank statements and proof of employment or study.
- Return or onward travel plans.
At the border
The EU’s Entry/Exit System records non-EU travellers’ fingerprints and a photo at the external border, replacing passport stamps. Allow extra time on your first trip.
AJOVIA helps you choose the right country, matches your itinerary to your application and checks your documents before your appointment.
